My watercolor portraits are created from what holds meaning for the person being portrayed. The goal is not only to capture a likeness but to reflect a part of their story through color, composition, and the elements that accompany them.

About Me
I am Toti Cuesta, watercolor artist and portrait artist. My work focuses on creating watercolor portraits in which the figure is the starting point for telling stories through color, symbol and emotion.
Over the years I have developed my own visual language that combines the precision of portrait painting with elements inspired by nature, memories, personal experiences and those aspects that form part of each person’s identity.
Personalized watercolor portraits are born from that same approach. Beyond physical likeness, each work seeks to reflect a unique story through the incorporation of places, passions, experiences or significant elements that give the image a special meaning.

A special moment
There are very special dates in life, like a First Communion. But as time passes, what stays in the memory is usually not the ceremony or the celebration, but the people we shared that day with.
In this portrait, Cris receives a hug from her grandfather. It was probably one of the many hugs he gave her throughout her life, but that one had a special meaning. That is precisely what this watercolor preserves: a moment of tenderness, closeness and love that forms part of her family story.
Beyond representing a celebration, this personalized watercolor portrait becomes a tribute to family bonds and to those memories that remain alive long after the day has ended.
Grandfather’s embrace
As Cris explains in her testimonial:
“It is a magical painting. It takes me back to the exact moment just as I lived it. It gives me wonderful feelings that are indescribable. This painting for me means having my grandfather close always and remembering him just as he was: an incredible, loving person who would do anything for his grandchildren.”
Creating this work also involved a process of interpretation. The original photograph showed the whole family together, but I decided to focus the composition exclusively on Cris and her grandfather to highlight the emotion of that moment and make it the true subject of the portrait.
A shared walk
Not all important memories are associated with big celebrations. Sometimes it is the simplest moments that stay with us for years: a conversation, a walk or an afternoon shared with someone we love.
This watercolor is born precisely from one of those everyday instants. A father and his son walk together through the streets of Madrid, enjoying their time together and the experience of discovering a new city.
Discovering Madrid
For this Italian family, the trip to Madrid was a very special experience. Beyond the monuments or the places visited, what truly mattered was the opportunity to share those days together.
In this personalized watercolor portrait, the focus is not on the city or the landscape, but on the bond between them. The gesture of walking hand in hand captures something universal: the security, the trust and the connection that are built through shared time.
Tradition and modernity in Plaza Mayor
Plaza Mayor is one of the most recognizable spaces in Madrid. Throughout the centuries it has been a market, a meeting place, a setting for celebrations and a crossroads for generations of Madrileños and visitors.
Today it continues to serve that same purpose, even though customs have changed. Conversations, encounters and social life are still present, but they coexist with new forms of communication that are part of our time.
A meeting place
Despite the transformations the city has undergone, Plaza Mayor retains its capacity to bring together people of very different ages, backgrounds and interests. It is one of those places where everyday life continues to unfold naturally.
In this watercolor of Plaza Mayor, what interested me was precisely that idea: showing how a historic space continues to form part of the daily life of those who inhabit the city. History remains, but is constantly renewed through the people who walk through it.

People change, customs evolve and every era leaves its mark on the way we meet, communicate and share public space.

Sometimes there is someone in our life who has a very special meaning and accompanies us in the most important moments. Someone to share everyday life with, because they are always there. Their company becomes part of our memories, and it does not always have to be a person.
Animals are part of many life stories. Their loyalty, their constant presence and the bond that forms with them gives them a unique place in the memory of those who love them deeply. A shared portrait can become a way of preserving that memory forever.
A shared story
As Elena explains in her testimonial:
“Vega is my kindred soul and is always unconditionally there for me. That is why I love the idea of capturing this bond in a portrait.”

There is also a detail that is easy to miss. I painted Vega’s fur and Elena’s hair in the same tones, as a subtle way of expressing what they shared.

Two people share an experience in an unknown city, focused on something as simple as looking up an address or deciding what the next stop of the journey will be. Color as symbol in my portraits
In my personalized watercolor portraits, color appears as a language of its own that adds nuance, depth and personality to the image.
Watercolor allows me to work with transparencies, glazes and layering that transform the perception of the face. Greens, violets, pinks and oranges can coexist in the same skin while preserving the identity of the person portrayed.
Each work finds its own chromatic balance. In some cases, colors emerge intuitively during the creative process; in others, they help to reinforce certain aspects of the composition or to create an image with greater visual impact.
Beyond physical likeness, color becomes a tool capable of adding character and individuality to the portrait, creating images that go beyond the literal representation of a photograph.
Recognitions and exhibitions
My original watercolors have been part of national and international exhibitions, publications and artistic projects.
Over the years I have had the opportunity to exhibit my work in galleries, museums and spaces dedicated to contemporary art, as well as take part in specialized publications.
Each exhibition is an opportunity to share the work with new people and allow the paintings to establish connections beyond the studio where they were created.
