The Dreamlike, Symbolic Universe of Toti Cuesta

In my watercolors, the female figure appears at the center of the image and merges with roots, trees, flowers, and animals. These elements speak of life, growth, connection with the Earth, and transformation. Scenes from Madrid’s architecture also appear, blending with the organic world and portraying the city as a living body.

I work with watercolor for its transparency and for the way water allows color to breathe and blend in an almost unpredictable way. I combine highly detailed areas —almost hyperrealistic, especially in the faces and some symbols—with others that are more open and suggestive, belonging to a more dreamlike world. In this way, each image opens a space where the real and the symbolic meet.
